Iraq to establish advisory security council: Talabani
font size

Iraq will establish an advisory security council in the coming national unity government, president Jalal Talabani said on Saturday.

"Many countries in the world have such council as it is an advisory one, which studies issues and submit its suggestions and recommendations," Talabani told a joint news conference with Sen. John McCain who heads a delegation of U.S. Senators.

McCain said all the Americans wanted the democracy to succeed in Iraq, hoping the Iraqi politicians to quickly form a new government.

"We exchanged with the Iraqi president point of views about the political issues in Iraq, including forming a national unity government," he said,

"Iraqi leaders have to rapidly form a high quality government because the American people wish the democratic experiment in Iraq to succeed," McCain said.

Talabani said on Friday that he was optimistic about forming a new national unity government, saying the government could be in place for parliamentary approval by the end of the month.

Iraq's new 275-member National Assembly held the first meeting on March 16 more than three months after the Dec. 15 parliamentary elections.

But the failure to agree on the dominant Shiite's candidate for the prime minister delayed the formation of a coalition government.
