Qurei meets Hamas leaders
font size

Outgoing Palestinian Prime minister Ahmed Qurei arrived in Gaza on Saturday for meeting with Hamas leaders, official Palestinian sources said.

Qurei held a meeting with Prime Minister-designate Ismail Haneya and incoming Foreign Minister Mahmoud Al-Zahar, the sources added.

Earlier Saturday, Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas said in a letter to Haneya that he had approved the new Hamas-led cabinet.

"Abbas asked Prime Minister-designate Haneya to present his cabinet and its platform to the Palestinian Legislative Council ( PLC) for a confidence vote," Tayeb Abdel Rahim, an aide to Abbas, told a news conference in the West Bank city of Ramallah.

However, Abbas was concerned about the new government's program which ignored the principles Abbas stressed of seeking negotiated solution to the conflict with Israel, Abdel Rahim said.

Haneya declined to react to Abbas's letter he received earlier on Saturday.

Haneya said the new cabinet was expected to win confidence vote on Monday, and take the oath of office on Thursday.
