A Sri Lankan Airforce officer died in a training mishap near the capital Colombo Monday morning, defense officials said.
The 26-year old officer was taking part in a training exercise off the coast of the Colombo suburb of Mount Lavinia.
He was trying to help three fellow trainees on board a boat to get on to the helicopter as part of the training exercise.
The cable he was using to land on the boat off the MI17 helicopter disjointed, crashing him into the sea, officials said.
The helicopter with 12 officers were carrying out a life saving drill around 9:20 a.m. local time (0320 GMT) when the mishap occurred, officials added.
The officer's body was found after Navy divers aided by Airforce helicopters carried out a rescue mission.
"He was pronounced dead at the Kalubowila hospital," an official said.
