An article published on China's leading English newspaper, the China Daily, on Monday has said that Russia, as China's important neighbor, has long been the priority of Chinese decision-makers in their working out of China's diplomatic policy.

"The Chinese government, acting on the principles of promoting international peace and expanding overseas cooperation, has managed to elevate China-Russia relations to ever higher levels", the newspaper said upon Russian President Vladimir Putin's China visit on Tuesday.

The article pointed out that effective cooperation between China and Russia in the fields of world security and crisis and emergencies handling indicates that the Sino-Russian strategic partnership has become an important factor in ushering in a multinational framework of world politics and bringing equality into international relations.

The article also noted that regional cooperation is another important aspect in the Sino-Russian strategic partnership, adding that the seed blossomed into the Shanghai Cooperation Organization in June 2001, which introduced a new model for regional cooperation in the post-Cold War world.

"What is more, China and Russia are indispensable to preventing the nuclear crisis on the Korean Peninsula from deteriorating again and to the final settlement of the issue," the article added.

"Strategic cooperation between the two countries globally, regionally and bilaterally enjoy still wider prospects," the newspaper stressed.

In addition, the article also highlighted that the prospects of cooperation in the field of energy resources supply and demand are expected to increase strategic interdependence.

"Also, exchanges in defence technology and coordination of military acts are of great significance," the article added.

The newspaper stressed that China-Russia strategic cooperation is not directed against any third party and this is determined by the non-alignment nature of their relationship and by the policy target of the two countries, which is aimed at mutual benefit for all members of the international community.

"This is also determined by their intentions to safeguard world peace and international norms, and by their need to have peaceful international environment favorable to their overall development, economic progress in particular," the article noted.
