Merkel meets Mubarak on Iran nuclear issue, Middle East peace

German Chancellor Angela Merkel on Saturday met with visiting Egyptian President Hosny Mubarak discussing issues concerning Iran's nuclear crisis and the Middle East issue.

Mubarak, who was on a visit to Berlin, met Friday his German counterpart Horst Koehler and former Foreign Minister Hans-Dietrich Genscher.

He is planned to fly to Austria after meeting German Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier on Sunday.

Mubarak's European trip came against the backdrop that the European Union trio of Germany, France and Britain had successfully had their proposal of reporting Iran to the UN Security Council approved in the International Atomic Energy Agency.

Germany and other EU nations have urged the Islamic movement Hamas, who won last month's Palestinian elections, to renounce violence and recognize Israel.

EU ministers, who met Friday in Salzburg, Austria, warned of massive aid cuts to the Palestinian territories if a Hamas-led government does not seek peace by peaceful means.

Mubarak has said funding should continue to the Hamas-led Palestinian Authority in order not to punish the Palestinians.

The Egyptian leader arrived on Friday in Berlin after talks with Italian leaders on issues including Iran's disputed nuclear program.
