India and Mozambique signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) in defense cooperation on Monday, the Indian Defense Minister said.

Indian Defense Minister Pranab Mukherjee and Republic of Mozambique's Defense Minister Tobias Joaquim Dai signed the MoU in response to the proposal made by the Mozambique government.

Tobias Joaquim Dai is on an official visit to India started from March 5 and he will be in the country till March 10 at the invitation of Defense Minister Pranab Mukherjee.

The MoU envisages the intention of both India and Mozambique to promote and expand bilateral relations in defense to the advantage of their Armed Forces, the Indian Defense Ministry said.

The scope of the MoU specifically covers all the three services, (in air, marine and land) envisaging cooperation in the field of military technical cooperation, logistic support and training, the Ministry said.

The joint activities envisaged under the MoU may include maritime patrolling of the Mozambican coast, mutual training in military institutes, supply of defense equipment and establishment of partnership and transfer of know-how and technology for assembling and repair of vehicles, aircraft and ships as well as rehabilitation of military infrastructure, said the Ministry.

It is envisaged that a joint Defense working group will be formed under this MoU to coordinate its implementation and follow up, the Ministry added.
