.Mil added under top-level domain name CN

China's Ministry of Information Industry (MII) on Feb. 26, 2006 released a notice on partially adjusting China's Internet domain name system.

The Ministry in the notice says the adjustment (.MIL be added under the top-level domain name CN) is made to meet the demand of the Internet development and in accordance with Article 6 of China Internet Domain Names Regulations.

The adjusted system took effect on March 1, 2006.

Under China's Internet domain name system, besides "CN", three domain names in Chinese characters, respectively meaning China, company and net, are set temporarily. Second-level domain names can be directly registered under the top-level domain name CN.

According to the system, two kinds of English-character second-level domain names are available, respectively for institutions engaged in different fields and organizations of different administrative regions.

There are totally seven domain names for institutions in different fields: AC for research institutions; COM for industrial, commercial and financial enterprises; EDU for China's educational institutions; GOV for China's governmental departments; MIL for China's defense departments; NET for agencies providing Internet services; ORG for non-profit organizations.
