Bush admits Iraq in "serious situation"
"The enemies of a free Iraq are working to stop Iraq's democratic progress. They understand a democratic Iraq will be a major defeat in their totalitarian aims. They're going to continue their campaign of violence and destruction," Bush said in a speech on the war against terrorism.
"We can expect the coming days will be intense. Iraq remains a serious situation, but I'm optimistic," Bush said.
Bush made the remarks after the bombing of the Golden Mosque, a Shiite shrine in northern Iraq and following religious clashes left more than 100 people killed.
The Golden Mosque, located some 95 kilometers north of Baghdad, is among Iraq's most sacred sites for Shiite Muslims and draws pilgrims from around the Islamic world to visit.
