Madrid train bombing suspects to be tried in Spain: paper

A judge investigating the March 2004 train bombings in Madrid will bring to trial 40 people suspected of involvement in the attacks, a Spanish newspaper reported on Sunday.

Judge Juan del Olmo, of the Spanish High Court, believes that the 40 suspects were linked to an Islamic radical cell, which has connection with Osama bin Laden's al-Qaida terror network, said El Pais newspaper, without giving a date for the trial.

A total of 116 suspects have been detained in the country since the train bombings killed 191 people and injured another 2,000 in Madrid on March 11, 2004.

Many of those being held are nearing the end of the two-year period the law permits for preventative jail without charge, said the newspaper.
