Cuba to host Central America, Caribbean triathlon contest in May
font size

Cuba will host the 2006 Central America and Caribbean triathlon meet in May, the country's official of the sport announced on Wednesday.

It is an event recognized by the International Triathlon Union (ITU),

Ramon Nunez, president of the Cuba's triathlon association, told local media.

Nunez said he was proud to be able to host the tournament on the Caribbean island, saying it was a sign that international organizations were recognizing Cuba's sporting know-how.

Some 300 athletes of all ages are expected to attend the event, including nine who are more than 60 years old. The elite athletes will earn ITU ranking points, helping them qualify for World Championship and Olympics places.

Cuba last hosted this even in June 1997, when Cuban Yacceri Leal and Colombian Carmenza Morales took first place.

Panama hosted the event in 2005, where Morales took first place again, as did Venezuela's Gilberto Gonzalez.
