Sri Lanka to stick to "one China policy": spokesman

The Sri Lankan government announced in Colombo Thursday that it would adhere to its "one China policy."

Government spokesman and Information and Media Minister Anura Yapa told reporters Thursday that "we will continue with the policy of recognizing the People's Republic of China as a sovereign state and Taiwan as one of its provinces."

This continuation in China policy was enunciated by Sri Lankan Foreign Minister Mangala Samaraweera at a weekly Cabinet meeting held on Thursday, Yapa said.

The Sri Lankan government spokesman also said that local business companies and individuals were free to carry on with trade relations with their Taiwan partners.

Sri Lanka and the People's Republic of China are enjoying a long tradition of diplomatic relations and China is one of this Indian Ocean island state's largest trading partners.
