The department of cultural relics of the Resources and Fine Art School under the Peking University and the China Committee for Folk Collections have been set up recently, reports People's Daily on Friday.

The department is the first of its kind to be established as an independent faculty within a university since the founding of the People's Republic of China in 1949. It will be engaged in many scientific researches on cultural relics and antiques, focusing on the training of appraisal skills.

The Appraisal Committee for Folk Collections of the school was also set up at the same time. The committee is composed of experts with rich experiences. There are five specialized groups in the committee, including pottery and porcelain, calligraphy and painting, jade ware, bronze and sundries.
