People will turn pale at the mention of "bird flu". However, a dog is not afraid of it. It fights at the most dangerous frontline, buffeting with virus of bird flu.

Named as "Nannan", the lovely Beagle dog is a quarantine one developed by scientific researchers in Guangzhou through three years of efforts. Before on duty, it was strictly trained in the Zengcheng base of Guangzhou. Now its nose can smell out about a thousand odors, according to Guangzhou Daily.

On Monday, the reporter went into the state-level training center of quarantine dogs in the suburbs of Guangzhou to watch how the dogs were trained. There live 1,500 dogs of "Nannan's" companions. A trained dog costs 100,000 yuan when put on sale on the market.

The top-level treatment given to the dogs includes independent villa, underground mineral water and green food. Even the bathing lotion for them is better than that used by man.

Quarantine dogs will be in isolation after checkout of bird flu virus

Beagle dogs were species in the ancient Roman period, and later they were brought to Britain.

Led by Liu Yunzhong, director with the animal research and experiment office under the Guangzhou Institute of Pharmaceutical Industry, the reporter went to the Guangzhou Training Center of Quarantine Dogs, which is located on a beautiful island in the Lian'an Reservoir area of the Zengcheng mountainous district in the suburbs of Guangzhou. The Guangzhou institute and the Guangzhou Entry-Exit Inspection and Quarantine have jointly sponsored the training center.

It is introduced that there are about 1,500 Beagle dogs in the base, among which, nearly 100 are chosen to train for quarantine purpose. "Nannan" in the New Baiyun International Airport in Guangzhou as well as other dogs on duty are from the training center.

To make references to the heroic deeds of "Nannan", Liu Yunzhong is very proud. He said that in May this year, the dog nosed out 45 duck and goose eggs, banned to carry by travelers, from the entry luggage of a passenger from Viet Nam. Inspection showed that they contained the H5N1 strain virus of highly pathogenic bird flu. The virus was detected for the first time by China's tour entry and exit port from a traveler coming from the epidemic area since the epidemic outbreak in some Southeast Asian countries in 2003. The State Administration for Entry-Exit Inspection and Quarantine awarded "Nannan" a Citation for Merit, First Class. Since then, the Beagle dog has been honored as "new defender at the national gate".

Quarantine dogs protect mankind with their life and health. They nose out animals, plants and poultry products, which is unavoidable to be exposed to bird flu virus and infected with it. If bird flue virus is detected in the end, the dogs will be in isolation until the end of the period of communicability.
