Mexico threatens to sever ties with Venezuela

Mexico said it will withdraw its ambassador and cut off diplomatic ties with Venezuela if the latter's President Hugo Chavez fails to make a timely apology after shouting words of anger at Mexican leader Vicente Fox.

Chavez's words "strike at the dignity of the Mexican people and government, Mexico demands a formal apology from Venezuela's government," the Foreign Relations Department said late on Sunday.

The department threatens that if the apology doesn't come by midnight Monday, Mexico will ask for the immediate withdrawal of Venezuela's ambassador and a recall of the Mexican ambassador from Venezuela.

Disputes between Chavez and Fox arose over a US-backed proposal for a Free Trade Area of the Americas during this month's Summit of the Americas, with Chavez saying "Don't mess with me" to his Mexican counterpart.
