Ratified by the State Council, the construction of Jinping No. 1 Hydropower Station on the Yalong River, Sichuan Province kicked off on Nov 12, 2005. The station with six generators has a total installed capacity of 3.6 million kilowatts and its construction will last nine years and three months.
As the biggest branch of the Jinsha River, the Yalong River is extremely rich in water resources. It is one of China's twelve large hydropower bases, with total capacity of 22.85 million kilowatt. The construction of Ertan Hydropower Station with installed capacity of 3.3 million kilowatts has been completed.
Jinping Hydropower Station, located at the juncture of Yanyuan and Muli counties of Liangshan Yi Autonomous Prefecture in Sichuan Province, is a key project on the Yalong River. Consisting of phase I and phase II development the Jinping Hydropower Station has a gross installed capacity of 8 million kilowatt.
With installed capacity of 3.6 million kilowatts, the Jinping No.1 Hydropower Station is capable of generating 16.62 billion kilowatt-hours annually. Generating electricity of 16.62 billion kilowatt-hours, Generating electricity will be the principal function of the Jinping No.1 Hydropower Station. It is also effective in storing energy, floodwater and blocking sands.
The 305-meter-high concrete dam of the station is world's highest dam. Its first generator unit is expected to generate electricity in 2012 and the project will be completed in 2014.
Jinping No.1 Hydropower Station is a base of electricity which is crucial for China's implementation of the "west-to-east power transmission" and "transmission of power from Sichuan to other regions" strategies. The construction of the station only migrated 7,479 local residents, and hence the hydropower station with least people migrated in Sichuan. The construction of the station is significant in optimizing the power grid in Sichuan, and speeding up the economic development in minority regions.
