Syrian president condemns Amman attacks as "terrorist acts"
font size

Syrian President Bashar al-Assad sent on Thursday a message of solidarity to Jordanian King Abdullah II in which he condemned the deadly hotel attacks in Amman as "terrorist acts", the official SANA news agency reported.

"We extend our sincerest condolences to Your Majesty and to the Jordanian sisterly people wishing wounded persons a quick recovery, " the president was quoted as saying in his cable.

The message also denounced all terrorist acts that claim lives of innocent people and target security and stability in any country, SANA said.

The Syrian Foreign Ministry said Wednesday night after the attacks that Syria received the news with "shock and sorrow" and denounced the crime "in the most severe expression".

At least 57 people were killed and more than 110 others wounded in the blasts that struck the Grand Hyatt, the Radisson SAS and the Days Inn hotel in downtown Amman.

The al-Qaida terror group in Iraq claimed responsibility on Thursday for the three suicide bombings in an internet statement, but the authenticity of the statement could not be verified.
