Australian PM supports death penalty of Saddam Hussein

Australian Prime Minister John Howard on Friday said he believed former Iraqi president Saddam Hussein should be executed if the Iraqi law authorizes death penalty on him.

Asked if Saddam should be executed if found guilty of murdering on Australia's Southern Cross Broadcasting radio, Howard said "If the law of Iraq authorizes that, then yes."

Although Australia does not have the death penalty, Howard said he supported the death penalty in this case because it was the law of the country.

"The law should apply equally to everybody," he said.

"We don't believe in capital punishment but that doesn't mean we conduct a campaign around the world in every case to stop it occurring," he said.

Australia is one of the core countries of the US-led coalition forces in Iraq, maintaining now about 1,300 military personnel in and around the war-torn Middle East country.
