Panamanian pugilist Celestino "Pelenchin" Caballero in the early hours of Sunday became lightweight champion of the World Boxing Association (WBO), after defeating Venezuelan Yober Ortega on unanimous decision.
Caballero took advantage of his distance from the early rounds, although Ortega was a tough rival and showed good condition and stamina.
Judges gave the advantage to Caballero 119-109, 117-111 and 116-112, thus Pelenching becoming Panama's 24th world champion.
The fight at Figali Convention Center was intense from the first round.
Caballero left a cut over the left eye of Ortega in the second round and made use of his longer arms to keep the Venezuelan at bay, as the latter has a record in the number of knockouts.
The Panamanian managed to cope with Ortega's last-round attack, when it seemed that knock-out was the only alternative against a defeat.
