Feature: "unusual airlift of relief goods"
font size

At 6:46 pm Sept 7, 2005 China Southern Airline's CZ433 flight landed at the US Air Force Little Rock Base in Arkansas. Onboard the Boeing 747 cargo plane are 104 tons of relief goods as well as Chinese government and people's deep sympathy and sincere regards to the American people in the hurricane-stricken areas.

"This is indeed an unusual airlift. I am not a historian, but I don't remember when China had airlifted relief cargos to the US. I think this is a historic event. We appreciate it very much," major general Reheiser, commander of the Little Rock Base told reporters.

A week ago, hurricane Katrina ravaged the Mexico Gulf region and inflicted great losses in Mississippis, Louisiana and Alabama. 80 percent of "Jazz Capital" New Orleans was submerged, and over one million residents lost their home and belongings. China's 10, 000 dresses for children, 24,800 sheets, 1,000 tents and 600 electricity generators, are all badly needed materials for the local people. It is no wonder that several US officials who came to receive the Chinese relief goods expressed thanks with one voice to Hu Yeshun, China's consulate-general in Houston. The electronic signboard in the air force base also showed "welcome, our Chinese friends. Thank you for your aid".

Strong as America is, it still has too many problems to deal with in the relief work. A lot of countries including China have offered helping hands to the US in the last week. An An-124 cargo plane from Russia just left the airport before China's cargo plane landed. According to Major General Reheiser, the Little Rock Base has received 14 planes of relief goods from 5 to 6 counties. In next two days, another 13 planes will come here too.

The catastrophe is a great misfortune for the US, but it is a lucky thing that so many countries are willing to help, said a reporter with local TV station who came to report the arrival of Chinese relief goods. "I wish there will be less wars and more solidarity in the world," he added.
