font size

Sri Lankan airport officials said Thursday a woman was killed and around 50 people received minor injuries as result of a bomb scare. They were taken to the nearby Negombo hospital for treatment.

The country's only international airport was put on an alert as a bomb scare was reported on an airliner leaving the airport, officials said.

The airport authorities had received a phone call saying a bomb had been placed on the Saudi Airways Boeing 747 which was about to take off at 1:50 p.m. for Riyadh.

Officials said the passengers had jumped out of the plane when the evacuation process was underway.

An airport official said that the bomb scare was a hoax and further search operations were still underway. The flight remains grounded he added.
