Cheney postpones trip to Canada due to hurricane
font size

US Vice President Dick Cheney has postponed a scheduled visit to Canada this week in the wake of Hurricane Katrina, the Washington Times reported on Tuesday.

Cheney had planned to visit Canada on Thursday and Friday. No new date was proposed for Cheney's visit, the report said, quoting US officials.

Canada is one of the largest supplier of crude and refined oil to the United States, providing 17 percent of US oil imports and 10 percent of American oil consumption, the report said.

The deadly Katrina Hurricane which swept the US Gulf Coast last week has devastated the city of New Orleans and resulted in economic costs of billions of dollars.

New Orleans Mayor Ray Nagin warned on Monday that the death toll from the hurricane could exceed 10,000.
