Norway condemns killing of Sri Lankan FM
font size

Norwegian Foreign Minister Jan Petersen on Saturday strongly condemned the assassination of Sri Lankan Foreign Minister Lakshman Kadirgamar and offered condolences to his family.

"I condemn this killing of a significant politician and a respected representative for his country," Petersen said in a statement.

The killing puts the peace process in Sri Lanka to a serious test. It is now of great importance that both parties to the conflict do their utmost to fully fulfill their obligations according to the cease-fire agreement, said the statement.

"I would like to express my condolences to his family, to Her Excellency the President of Sri Lanka, the government of Sri Lanka and to the Sri Lankan people." Petersen added.

The rebels and the government entered the Norwegian-backed cease-fire in February 2002 and started face to face negotiations seven months later, but the rebels walked out the talks in April 2003 after six rounds of talks.
