Sri Lanka police fire tear gas to control student protest
font size

Sri Lankan police fired tear gas on Wednesday to quench a student demonstration protesting against the government's planned educational reform.

A group of students of the Inter University Students' Federation (IUSF) staged a protest walk from Colombo northern suburb's Kelaniya University to the capital's main business area of Fort when they came under a tear gas attack.

The clash led to long traffic queues and caused trouble to office workers who were returning to their homes.

The Colombo police chief Pujitha Jayasundera said the police were compelled to use tear gas because the students tried to breach the city's high security zone.

The IUSF is affiliated to the leftist JVP or the People's Liberation Front which now holds opposition seats.

Duminda Nagamuva, the IUSF convenor said the government's planned educational reform envisages education in English medium compulsory and the subject of mathematics would be taught only in English.

Nagamuva said the reform would affect students from the deprived sections of the society.

He blamed the Education Ministry headed by President Chandrika Kumaratunga and the World Bank for advocating reforms.
