DPRK opposes Japan's plan to refer abduction issue to six-party talks

The Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) on Wednesday accused Japan creating obstacles for the resumption of six-party talks, and of trying to chill the talks by referring the "abduction issue" to them.

Rodong Sinmun, the DPRK's leading newspaper, said in a commentary that Japan's plan is aimed at chilling the atmosphere for the resumption of the six-party talks in Beijing, which is slated to open at the end of this month.

"They are nothing but an attempt to impair the image and authority of the DPRK and isolate it internationally, pursuant to the US hostile policy towards the DPRK," the article said.

Japanese Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi reportedly said at the recent G8 summit that Japan seeks a "comprehensive solution to the issue of the abduction of Japanese citizens and the nuclear issue" and that "Japan would not normalize its relations with north Korea" unless the abduction issue is solved.

"Japan's participation in the talks would only create complicity in their work, far from bringing anything helpful" to the table, the commentary said.

"If Japan keeps peddling the already solved abduction issue, going against the people's mind-set, it will have to pay a dear price for that," it warned.
