US, DPRK officials meet through New York Channel

The State Department on Friday confirmed that officials of the United States and the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) met through the so-called New York Channel on Thursday.

Joseph DeTrani, US envoy to the six-party talks, met with senior DPRK diplomat Ri Gun at an academic conference in New York, State Department spokesman Sean McCormack said at a briefing. "Yesterday, in the context of the seminar, there was contact between Mr. DeTrani and Mr. Ri Gun," McCormack said, stressing that "this was not a negotiation."

The United States has said that it uses the New York Channel to send messages to the DPRK, but not for negotiations. The last time the two sides met through the New York Channel was on June 6.
