Iran and Azerbaijan signed Monday a memorandum of understanding (MoU) on defense cooperation, the official IRNA news agency reported.
The MoU, inked by Iran's Defense Minister Ali Shamkhani and his visiting Azerbaijani counterpart Safar Abiyev after their second round of talks, sets the framework for expansion of defense cooperation and consolidation of peace and stability in the region.
During the talks, Shamkhani said Iran will not withhold any efforts to bolster bilateral ties with Azerbaijan and that it will help boost tranquility and welfare of the two nations as well as the whole region.
The Iranian minister also expressed hope that the regional misunderstandings will be settled through negotiations.
Abiyev, for his part, stressed that Azerbaijan, as the Islamic Republic's northern neighbor, is an independent country and "have not ceded any military base to Iran's enemies."
