US death toll in Iraq hits 1,600

The US Defense Department says the death toll of US troops has hit 1,600 since the launch of the Iraq war in March, 2003.

The department's latest statistics show that the number of casualties has surpassed 13 thousand.

And some 588 US troops have either been killed or injured in Afghanistan and its neighboring countries during military actions since 2001.
