Zambia to host 2011 All-Africa Games

Zambia has earned the right to host the 2011 All-Africa Games, which was last held in Abuja, Nigeria, four years ago, the official Times of Zambia newspaper reported Tuesday.

Zambia was granted the right after the withdrawal of other bidders at the last minute when the Supreme Council for Sport in Africa met in Algeria last week, the report said.

Sports Minister Gladys Nyirongo was in Algiers, the venue for the 2007 games, to make Zambia's bid, it said.

Sonstone Kashiba, former Zambian director of sports, was elected unopposed for the post of the Supreme Council for Sport in Africa.

The quadrennial All-Africa Games is the biggest sporting event in Africa. The report called on the southern African country to improve its infrastructure to international standards and raise teams for defunct sports like hockey, softball and handball.
