17,000 Nepal women forced into prostitution in India

There are 17,000 Nepalese women forced into prostitution in India's Deli, Mumbai, Pune and Calcutta red-light centers alone, a study disclosed in Kathmandu Saturday.

The study published by the Asmita Women's Publication Group, a non-governmental organization, noted this number by conducting on-the-spot investigation in every brothel in the red-light areas of India's four cities.

According to the study, the investigators talked personally to the Nepali women in the brothels of India in course of doing research.

"Most of them fall prey to the avarice of family members. Localbrokers come second in the line of the process of selling them there," the study said.

The study quoted the International Labor Organization statistics as saying over 10,000 Nepalese women are trafficked to India into prostitution every year.
