EU says Russia-Iran nuclear deal should respect international rules
"The EU makes it clear that the rules of International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) and the regulation of Non-Proliferation Treaty should be respected," said Luxembourg's Foreign Minister Jean Asselborn, whose country holds the rotating EU Presidency.
Asselborn's comment came after the signing on Sunday of a deal for the Russian-built nuclear power plant in Busheher, south Iran.
After talking with visiting Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, Asselborn told a press conference that Iran should not develop nuclear weapons, adding that the EU, the United States and Russia have the same interest on this issue.
Russian Foreign Minister Lavrov, who came here to attend a EU-Russia Minister Troika meeting, defended his country's cooperation with Iran on nuclear power plant, saying that the Busheher plant would be operated under the close supervision of the IAEA.
"The Europeans clearly know what we are doing in Iran," he added.
