Chinese delegate calls for prevention of arms race in outer space

It is utmost necessary and urgent for the international community to prevent the weaponization of and an arms race in outer space given the obvious inadequacies in the international legal system for outer space, a senior Chinese official said Tuesday.

Hu Xiaodi, the Chinese ambassador on disarmament affairs to the United Nations office in Geneva, told a plenary meeting of the Conference on Disarmament (CD) that an international conference would be held for this aim.

The conference on "Safeguarding Space Security: Prevention of an Arms Race in Outer Space" will be jointly held by China, Russia, United Nations Institute for Disarmament Research (UNIDIR) and Canada's Simons Foundation on March 21-22 in Geneva, he said.

Topics of the conference cover the peaceful uses of outer space, the necessity and urgency of the prevention of an arms race in outer space, the protection of space assets, the main elements of further legal instrument on outer space, and the monitoring and compliance for the international instrument.

Internationally well-known scholars, government officials and industry representatives are invited to exchange their views on the wide-ranging topics, said Ambassador Hu.

He also invited delegates of the CD members and observers to attend the conference and actively participate in the discussions.
