    Lantern village busy for Spring Festival

Lidian village is famous for lantern making and 80 percent of the villagers earn a living by making lanterns. Lanterns are an important symbol for the Chinese traditional Spring Festival, which starts from Feb. 9 this year.

    Iraqis in United Arab Emirates start voting

    An election worker is ready to serve voters at a polling station set up for the Iraqi general elections in Abu Dhabi, capital of the United Arab Emirates (UAE), Jan. 28, 2005. Eligible Iraqi voters living in the UAE started voting on Jan. 28 in Abu Dhabi and Dubai, with the process lasting for three days.

    5th World Social Forum held in Brazil

    Brazilian President Luis Inacio Lula da Silva addresses the 5th World Social Forum (WSF) in the southern Brazilian city of Porto Alegre on Jan. 27, 2005. He appealed for international aid to developing countries and debt relief for poor nations during his speech here on Thursday. The 5th WSF with the theme of anti-globalization was kicked off Wednesday evening in Porto Alegre. About 78,000 representatives from 120 countries and 6,000 journalists had enrolled to take part in the 6-day forum.
