Death toll in Asia quake, tsunamis rises well over 85,000

The death toll from the massive tsunamis triggered by an 8.7-magnitude earthquake in Indonesia on December 19 has risen to well over 85,000. Following are the figures reported from some disaster-hit countries:

Sri Lanka 24,000
India 10,850
Indonesia 52,000
Thailand 1,900
Malaysia 65
Myanmar 90
Somalia 100
Maldives 55

The numbers are based on local official and media reports as of 1130 GMT Thursday and they are subject to updating.
