China to offer emergency aid to south, southeast Asia

China announced Sunday evening that it will offer emergency humanitarian aid to India, Indonesia, Sri Lanka, Maldives and Thailand which were seriously stricken by the largest ever earthquake and tsunami in 40 years.

The Chinese Ministry of Commerce said that it has launched an emergency aid mechanism and consulted with concerned departments to deliver the aid as soon as possible.

The earthquake, measuring 8.1 at the Richter Scale by Indonesia Meteorological and Geological Bureau, rocked south and southeast Asia Sunday morning and triggered tsunami, killing over 4,000 people by press time.
