Vietnam downed Thailand 2-1 in the Agribank Cup soccer tournament contested by four countries including Brazil and Portugal.
Twelve minutes into the game, striker Anuruck Sriked made local fans in the My Dinh National Stadium silent for a while when he shot the ball right at the cross bar by a free kick from left wing.
In spite of not showing an enthusiastic performance in the first half, it was the home team with the line-up 3-5-2 that scored the opening goal.
In the 17th minute, young striker Pham Van Quyen had a corner kick from left wing, driving the ball to half-backer Phan Van Tai Em who netted the first goal by a header from a distance of some eight meters. In the situation, Thai players left the penalty area nearly empty.
Thai player Pisanu Ketkarm equalized the score by a powerful shot from a free kick near the penalty area in the 30th minute.
Tai Em tried to block the ball, but it went high and ran into the near corner of the net. Vietnamese goalie Bui Quang Huy did reach high enough to catch it.
Eight minutes into the second half, Tai Em passed the ball from near the field's center to striker Le Cong Vinh who had a tactful coordination with striker Le Huynh Duc, substitute for Pham Van Quyen, and then shot the ball with his left leg from the goal area's left wing. Surachai Jirasirichote, in an effort to drive the ball away, forced it to move direction and go beyond the reach of Thai goalkeeper Watcharapong Klaiian into the goal.
In the second half, Vietnamese players changed their line-up to 4-3-3 and rapidly launched a series of attacks. However, Anuruck, in a face-to-face stance to Quang Huy, made the Vietnamese goalie have to try his best to save a goal in the 70th minute.
The score of 2-1 remained unchanged to the end of the match.
Earlier, Portugal's FC Porto B defeated Brazil's Santa Cruz 1-0 in a fairly unattractive opener.
The Agribank Cup, funded by the Vietnam Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development and to be concluded on Sunday, sees the participation of four teams, namely Vietnam's national team, selected Thai team (not national squad), Santa Cruz and FC Porto B.
