China develops first hi-definition video chip

The Institute of Computing Technology under Chinese Academy of Sciences and its partners in Ningbo, Zhejiang Province have succeeded in jointly developing China's first high definition video chip. The developers own the intellectual property rights of the chip, Phoenix Chip I as it is called. This means that China has mastered the state-of-art core technology of multi-media coding and decoding and caught up with the internationally advanced design of multi-media core chip.

The chip can be used to the production of high definition digital TV, high density DVD, digital camera, video conferencing and video monitoring system.

The institute also launched a design center for integrated circuit with department concerned in Ningbo in September 16. The center can provide EDA(electronic design automation) environment.
