A recent market survey showed 51.6 percent of the 500 most popular brands sold in Shanghai, China'sleading commercial center, were made by Chinese enterprises.
The survey, conducted by the Shanghai Municipal Commercial Information Center, covered more than 100 commodities sold at 3,000 shopping centers in Shanghai last year.
Of the ten most popular disc players sold in Shanghai, eight were China-made. For the sales of color television sets, air conditioners, gas cookers and electric rice cookers, six of the 10top brands were domestic products. About 63 percent of the listed household electric appliances and 54 percent of foodstuffs were Chinese products.
However, foreign brands sell well in the categories of cell phones, digital cameras, perfume, leather bags, watches and clocks, carbonated drinks and sportsware. Young people constituted the majority of consumers of above-mentioned goods.
Experts stated that though the ratio of popular domestic brandsis slightly higher than foreign brands, Chinese products lack comprehensive competitiveness and the ability for sales promotion.Apart from household electrical appliances, most domestic brands were made with simple technology.
