Reservoir dike in danger in Xinjiang

People living near a large reservoir in Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region in northwest China were evacuated after water was found gushing out of some holes in the dike Wednesday evening.

People living near a large reservoir in Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region in northwest China were evacuated after water was found gushing out of some holes in the dike Wednesday evening.

Farmlands and houses belonging to two companies of the XinjiangProduction and Construction Corporation on the lower reaches of the reservoir had been partly flooded, but no casualties had been reported by midnight Wednesday.

The local government was organizing the evacuation work to helpresidents retreat to a safe area six kilometers away.

The temperature at the reservoir area was around minus 20 degrees Centigrade at press time.
