The Macao Special Administrative Region (SAR) government has opened a winter shelter for receiving homeless people during the Spring Festival, the Macao Social Welfare Institute carried on an announcement on all major newspapers Tuesday.

The opening of the government-run winter shelter is mainly due to a sharp decline in the local temperature caused by a cold current from the north. The lowest temperature in the subtropical region will drop to seven degrees Celsius at the eve of China's Lunar New Year Wednesday, according to the Macao Meteorological Bureau.

The winter shelter prepares instant noodles, drinks and other winter needfuls for the homeless, said the institute.

Meanwhile, employers of the Social Welfare Institute will look for homeless people and other persons in need around the city, giving them quilts and coats and persuading them to go to the winter shelter.

Macao SAR, which has been widely praised for its effective social welfare policy, only has a small population of homeless people
