Vietnam reports two more suspected flu type A patients in the southern province of Kien Giang, raising the total to 20, according to Vietnam News Agency on Friday.

Pham Thi Kim Thuong and Tran Van Phong, both 23 years old, were hospitalized with symptoms of a high temperature, difficult breathing, low blood pressure, and decreasing numbers of white cells, the symptoms of flu type A which has killed 13 local people so far.

The Kien Giang Hospital said the two young patients are in need of respirators, and at risk of dying soon. It is awaiting the result of testing whether they are contracted with flu type A or not.

If the two youths are contracted with flu type A, they will be the first patients in southern Vietnam. Other 18 patients live in the northern region.

In a move to curb the spread of bird flu which is thought to be the source of flu type A, Vietnam's Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development has urged local authorities to put all veterinary, public health workers and market controllers on an emergency status to control transport of poultry and destroy infected chickens.

Sources from the ministry are reported to have said that the ministry has just decided to cull all chickens, both sick and healthy ones, in the worst-infected areas.

According to the ministry, bird flu has appeared in 10 northern and southern localities, including Long An, Tien Giang, An Giang and Ho Chi Minh City. Others at a high risk of bird flu outbreak include Bac Ninh, Bac Giang, Hanoi and Hai Phong city.

The authorities of Ho Chi Minh City and the two southern provinces of An Giang and Tien Giang have asked chicken traders to temporarily cease doing business.
