Construction of Macao's new border building, which is adjacent to Zhuhai in south China's Guangdong Province, was completed in Macao on Jan. 15.

The building, which took two years of construction at a cost of134.8 million patacas (16.85 million US dollars), will be officially put into use on Feb. 2.

With a designed daily handling capacity of 310,000 passengers, which doubles the present one, the new border gate is expected to accommodate the increasing passenger flow between China's mainland and Macao in the next 10 years.

An affiliated project to the border gate, which includes the building of a public square and a public transportation terminal, will be completed in October.

Macao's tourist arrivals, which mainly enter via the land border gate from the mainland, recorded a double-digit growth in December 2003 to 1.2 million. The annual number of arrivals reached 11.88 million last year, which was boosted by the mainland's facilitated individual travel scheme on Hong Kong and Macao-bounded tours.

Chief Executive of the Macao Special Administrative Region (SAR) Edmund Ho Hau Wah, Vice Chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference Ma Man Kei, Director of the Liaison Office of the Central People's Government in the Macao SAR Bai Zhijian, Commissioner of the Foreign Ministry in the Macao SAR Wan Yongxiang, Commander of the People's Liberation Army (PLA) Garrison in Macao Liu Lianhua attended the ceremony to mark the completion of the project on Jan. 15.
