Hong Kong Innovation and Technology Commission has suggested that Hong Kong should focus onmatching its research technology with industry needs of the Chinese mainland.

Commissioner of the Innovation and Technology Commission Anthony S.K. Wong explained the commission's policy vision for promoting innovation and technology development in Hong Kong at a luncheon organized by the Hong Kong General Chamber of Commerce onWednesday.

When discussing the strategic framework for innovation and technology, Wong said that Hong Kong should have a better focus and coordination of existing innovation and technology programs. Since it is a big business to sell technology to industries in thePearl River Delta (PRD), he suggested that Hong Kong should match its university research with industry needs of the Chinese mainland.

He said it is important for Hong Kong to enhance the competitiveness of its leading foundation industries through the application of technology.

The new strategy also advocates the linkage of Hong Kong programs with mainland programs and institutions. Hong Kong is enjoying the advantage of duty free products because of Hong Kong/Mainland Closer Economic Partnership Arrangement (CEPA), this should attract mainland and overseas companies to set up applied research and development centers in Hong Kong, Wong said.

Wong pointed out that, by improving funding mechanism, strengthening linkage between Hong Kong universities and mainland industries and matching applied research and development with PRD technology needs, the relevance of applied research and development will be enhanced.
