China Power International Holding Ltd. (CPI), a major state-owned electricity firm set up in Hong Kong, signed a contract Monday to buy seven 600 megawatts super-critical steam turbine sets.
CPI made the biggest ever generator order in China with three generator producers in the Chinese mainland. The contract involved nearly 4 billion yuan (about 483 million US dollars).
CPI General Manager Li Xiaolin said the company was concentrating on promoting the development of China's power projects and easing the country's power shortage.
She said the power generation equipment would be installed in the most power-hungry eastern and northern areas and the country's traditional heavy industrial bases in the northeast region.
Since June 2002, China's power consumption has been increasing by an average 15 percent a month. Restrictions on electricity use have been launched in 21 provinces and autonomous regions.
The State Grid Corporation said China's electricity consumption would grow to 2.091 trillion kwh in 2004, up 207 billion kwh over 2003.
CPI boasts total assets of 13 billion yuan, holding a power generation capacity of 5.075 million kw.
