4,500 families displaced by fire in Manila

A huge fire razed a slum area in a district of Manila after midnight Sunday, leaving more than 1,000 families displaced, a local television reported.

A huge fire razed a slum area in a district of Manila after midnight Sunday, leaving 4,500 families displaced, a local television reported.

There were no reported casualties in the fire, which reached the highest alert level for firefighters, the ABS-CBN news channelquoted Department of Social Welfare and Development Secretary Maria Corazon Soliman as saying.

Soliman said evacuation centers were being set up to assist thevictims and appealed to the public to donate food, potable water and sleeping mats, adding that "Many were affected, we have to help each other."

Philippine President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo reportedly inspected evacuation centers and consoling the victims.
