Xinjiang to invest 14b yuan in road construction in 2004

Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region in northwestern China is expected to input 14 billion yuan (1.7 billion US dollars) on road construction in 2004, a significant rise from 10 billion yuan (1.2 billion dollars) in 2003.

Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region in northwestern China is expected to input 14 billion yuan (1.7 billion US dollars) on road construction in 2004, a significant rise from 10 billion yuan (1.2 billion dollars) in 2003.

The autonomous region has built more than 82,000 km of road to date, 1,645 km of which were newly built and re-built in 2003, according to a source with the local communications department on Tuesday.

From 2001 to 2003, the region invested a total of 20.2 billion yuan (about 2.42 billion dollars) in road construction.

Construction of roads in local rural areas started to go into full swing last year with an investment of 850 million yuan (some 102 million dollars), a figure that is to rise to 1.5 billion yuan(over 180 million dollars) in 2004.
