Quarantine inspectors in Guangdong Province have destroyed opium seeds found among 280 tons of sesame seeds imported from India.
The bureau first discovered the seeds while inspecting with magnifying glasses a consignment of sesame imported from India on Dec. 9.
It then found opium seeds in two other consignments of Indian sesame, which came through the same import-export company, on Dec. 10 and Dec. 30.
Bureau officers said the three batches of sesame weighed 280 tons, with the first containing one opium seed per kilogram and the other two containing one seed every three kilograms.
They said all the seized sesame was processed by the same factory. They also seized seeds of euphorbia and 60 other dangerous categories of plants, and over 10 varieties of insects, including bruchid weevils, from the sesame.
