Qinhuangdao Port in northern China's Hebei Province reported a record 125 million tons of throughput, including 109.7 million tons of coal and 4.22 million tons of oil, in 2003.

As a hub diverting coal from north to south China, the port handled half of the total coal transported by sea last year.

Since last winter, the port has received many urgent requests for coal from many thermal power plants in east and north China, which have been operating below their capacity because of inadequate coal supply.

Daily coal transport figures reached 350,000 tons since Dec. 17,2003, which played an important role in relieving coal shortage of the power plants.
