Inaugural FESPIC Youth Games to be held in HK next week

The first tournament for the disabled youths in the Far East and South Pacific region will be held in Hong Kong next week, local organizers announced on Tuesday.

More than 500 athletes from China, Indonesia, India, Japan, South Korea, Macao of China, Malaysia, Nepal, the Philippines, Singapore, Sri Lanka, Tonga, Thailand, Chinese Taipei, Vietnam, and Hong Kong of China will participate in the three-day Far East & South Pacific Youth Games (FESPIC Youth Games).

According to the age difference, participants will be divided into two groups. Athletes between 16-19 years old make up group A,while those aged from 12 to 15 consist of group B.

Athletics, badminton, boccia, swimming and table tennis are included in the FESPIC Youth Games which scheduled for December 24-26, according to Dr. York Chow, chairman of the organizing committee of the Inaugural FESPIC Youth Games.

"This is about the right time to prepare for the Paralympic Games 2008 in Beijing for Asian participants," said Chow, also chairman of the Hong Kong Sports Association of the Physically Disabled.

He told a press conference Tuesday, "The key initiative to organize this Inaugural FESPIC Youth Games is to encourage more disabled youths to participate in sports competition in order to raise the standard in the Far East and South Pacific region."
