Nanjing Massacre remembered

An assembly in commemoration of the 66th anniversary of Nanjing Massacre and of International Peace Day was convened in this capital of east China's Jiangsu Province Saturday, with the attendance of over 3,000 people.

An assembly in commemoration of the 66th anniversary of Nanjing Massacre and of International Peace Day was convened in this capital of east China's Jiangsu Province Saturday, with the attendance of over 3,000 people.

Wailing sirens were heard in this east Chinese city around 10 a.m. Saturday to mourn the 300,000 Chinese civilians who were killedby Japanese invaders when they occupied Nanjing 66 years ago.

During the function, a Nanjing Peace Declaration was read, and a local children's artistic troupe and a choir from Japan sang peace songs. Survivors of the massacre and some representatives of the younger generation rang the giant peace bell erected on the square of the memorial to the massacre, followed by the release of3,000 pigeons.

In a related development, a picture album featuring foot and palm prints done on copperplates of 120 witnesses to the Nanjing Massacre, their photos and testimonies, in Chinese, Japanese and English versions, was published by the Nanjing Publishing House tomark the 66th anniversary of the atrocity.
