The third Military World Games (MWG) came to a ending with Democratic People's Republic of Korea took the last gold medal in men's football at the Southern Cislian city on Thursday.

Forward Nan Song-Chol's two strikes in the second half earned a 3-2 win for DPR Korea over Egypt and the soccer title.

Italy fielded the largest delegation at the games and participated in almost all the events, but the host country had to settle for the third place on medal table behind military sports powerhouses Russia and China.

Russia collected 33 gold, 39 silver and 36 bronze medals to top the table. And China, which dominated the diving and swimming, finished second with 31-16-13 bronze, followed by Italy with 25-14-22.

The organizers hailed the MWG a success despite events curtailment, late arrivals and no-one-know schedules.

The Cisilian port city had hosted the 19th University Games in 1995 and now the Military World Games. But the organizers cut the sports events from 15 to 11 as its sports infrastructure can hardly fit the standard set by the International sports federations.

But the governing body of world military sports also praised the organizers as they host the games in a very short time.

"The host city of third MWG was changed several times." said Glanni Gola, president of Council of International Sports Military (CISM), "When we decided that Catania would host the games, there were only several months left to the organizers, and we had to postpone the games to the end of the year."

"I am very happy that Catania successfully host the games. They did a very good job in such a short times," said Glanni.

The organizers handed the MWG flag to Hyderabad in which the fourth edition will be held in 2007. The Indian city recently hosted "with great success" the first Afro-Asian Games.

"We have four years, we have a big host city, we have a good market and we have good establishment for the games," said Glanni.
